ORIGIN OF RAQS SHARQI
Middle Eastern Dance

Showcase/BDVASZ.jpg

Its history back to over 6000 years ago, with the Egyptians, Turks, and Phoenicians

all clams the dance as their own.

In Arabic, the Dance is called “Raqs Sharqi” – “Dance from the East”, and has its roots in Middle Eastern fertility ceremonies – a dance performed by women for woman. It was originally thought to girls from and early age in order to strengthen their abdominal muscles in preparation for childbirth, when the Mother Goddess was worshipped, sex, and childbearing were sacred.

In Turkey the dance is called “Oryantal Tanci”- “The dance of Orient”

The current term “Belly Dance” it came from the French “Dance Du Ventre” – “Dance of the Stomach” – a phrase coined at the turn of the century after the introduction of Raqs Sharqi at the Chicago exposition in 1893 by a dancer called “Little Egypt”, and danced in less revealing costumes than those worn today. But her performance was too exotic for Victorian morality, and the dancers who followed added mish to the negative image of Raqs Sharqi. Even today, the term “belly dance” in inextricably linked to the kind of sleazy, sexual glamour portrayed in film and fiction.

Raqs Sharqi is the last vestige of goddess worship in the Middle East and is in danger of becoming extinct.

This dance is an earthy, heavy, and highly exciting style, in which the dancer, male or female, uses a stick or a cane. It is from the farm areas, the countryside, and when men perform this routine, it is done as to simulate a battle. Their attire is a long white, cotton robe called "Gala Baya". The women perform either in their oriental belly dance costume or in a dress, called a "Beledi Dress" and tying a hip scarf around the hips while in movement. The ladies dance with a cane, not a stick. They twirl the cane in one hand while dancing.

Beledi - Folkloric Style:

A very good example of Beledi dance style is fabulous Egyptian dancer Zohair Zaki, which performed Raks Sharki as Beledi. She did intricate moves within her space and preferred heavy, strong, yet simple percussion, and always was in control of either quick hip locks or her band.
